Freelancing With Purpose - Making a Difference Through Your Work

Whether it’s to supplement their existing income or to forge a path entirely of their own, a growing number of Americans are choosing to freelance as their full-time career. In doing so, they’re often finding that making a difference through their work is one of the biggest rewards.

Freelancing with Purpose: Making a Difference Through Your Work
Regardless of their field, most freelancers have an innate desire to make a positive impact through their work. It might be as simple as providing a service that saves a client money or creating an image for them online that helps to boost their business. It could also be the result of a passion for a particular cause or simply wanting to do something that has a genuine social or environmental impact.

The problem with many of these types of jobs, however, is that they’re often more difficult and time-consuming than they first appear. And it’s not always clear what the long-term benefits of their efforts are. It can be easy to get discouraged if you’re working in an area that isn’t immediately bringing about the change you want to see in the world, particularly if you’re a freelancer.

It’s important for freelancers to understand that not all of their efforts will immediately have a tangible effect, and that’s okay. But it’s also important to set aside some time each day or week for tasks that aren’t directly related to your clients so you can recharge and refocus your energy. This will allow you to focus on the projects that are really making a difference, and it will help prevent you from getting burnt out by spending too much time focused on the negative.

Another way to keep a clear perspective on your work is to create a schedule that allows you to manage the hours you spend on freelance activities (invoicing, searching for new clients, etc.) and your personal life. This will help you avoid overworking yourself or neglecting the tasks that aren’t directly related to generating revenue and can also be an excellent tool for setting boundaries with clients who might not understand or respect your personal commitments.

One of the best ways to stay motivated when freelancing is to embrace a sense of mastery and build up your skillset over time. This can be especially powerful for those who choose to pursue freelance careers in fields like writing, graphic design or photography.

While the idea of a lifetime of learning isn’t for everyone, it can be a great motivating factor to know that you are continuously improving and expanding your capabilities. Eventually, this will give you the confidence to stand out from the competition and land the clients that you really want. It can also help you to overcome the fear of rejection that many freelancers feel when they’re pursuing work outside of their comfort zone.
